AlvaBarrier - Mud And Rain Protector. The technical name for the dreadful mud- fever and rain-scald suffered by horses is "Dermatophilus congolensis". Mud fever and rain scald, also known as scratches or pastern dermatitis, are two of a group of diseases horses get, causing irritation and dermatitis in the lower limbs, over the face, along the back and the rump. Often caused by a mixture of bacteria, typically Dermatophilus congolensis, and Staphylococcus spp, mud fever most commonly affects the pastern and heel area but can also affect the upper leg, the belly, and in some cases the neck area (also known as Rain-Scald. Mud-fever and rain scald can also be caused by fungal organisms (dermatophytes). Photosensitization, chorioptic mange mites, contact dermatitis and other conditions also contribute to some cases. This condition is also known as dew poisoning, grease heel, or greasy heel. Mud fever and rain scald used to affect most horses and ponies during winter and early spring, however due to the worlds climate change, it's now an all year-round problem, resulting in painful sores and scabs, which in severe cases can make a horse lame. Non-pigmented skin tends to be more severely affected. AlvaHorse has been helping caring loving owners since 1995 to combat these serious problems.
