BJC Cat 6A cable -- Certified Quality Performance Cat 6A seems like a simple affair -- four pairs of wire in a jacket. What's to mess up? It turns out that there's plenty. When we at Blue Jeans Cable first examined the market for Cat 6A cables, we found that 80% of "Cat 6A" cables sold online and in brick-and-mortar stores failed to meet spec. Worse, about half of them didn't even meet the easier Cat 5e spec. In explaining this to people, we encounter a fair bit of skepticism. Surely, people will say, there's a spec, and surely all the cables are built to meet it. But, as they say: "Don't call me Shirley." It's not quite so simple. Cat 6A is not a construction spec, but a performance spec. The object, in meeting spec, is to keep specific types of electrical loss and interference within acceptable limits. For Ethernet patch cords, these are return loss (signal reflections caused principally by impedance instability) and crosstalk (signal from one pair interfering with signals on another). Since good materials can make bad cables, even a cable assembled from the good stuff isn't certain to pass spec; the only way to really tell is to run the cable on a properly configured "certification tester," which sweeps a Cat 6A cable with frequencies up to 500 MHz and measures return loss and crosstalk all up and down the range. We use Fluke certification testers, and we use them on EVERY individual cable -- if it doesn't pass, it doesn't ship. Read more Quality Cable: twist rates and cable lay As simple as four twisted pairs look, more is going on than meets the eye. The characteristic impedance of the pairs is critical, and depends upon consistent insulation thickness and tightness of twisting. And the twist rates on the four pairs must differ in ways that are sufficiently mathematically un-related that it doesn't encourage crosstalk. This isn't your grandfather's telephone wire. Quality Connectors Most people like to use one-piece connectors, and for ease of application, they're great. But the performance characteristics of the one-piece connectors tend to be problematic: you need better dimensional and positional control of the wire to minimize RL and crosstalk. We use a three-piece connector from Sentinel in York, PA, which is fiddly to apply but provides excellent, reproducible performance. Quality Assembly: end prep and termination Quality cable and quality connectors will do you no good without quality assembly practices. Too much un-twisting of wires, careless alignment and crimping, and other little mistakes will cause RL and crosstalk spikes. Even WITH excellent termination quality, the worst part of the assembly will always be at the ends; the job of an experienced assembler is to minimize the harm which connectorization inevitably does to the cable performance.l Certification of EVERY cable There's only one way to really know a cable is spec-compliant, and that's to run it on a costly certification tester, like the Fluke units we use at BJC. Some assemblers don't test their cables at all; some test a sample now and then; we test every last cable we build, and if it doesn't pass specification, it doesn't leave the building. We enclose the test report -- not a generic report for our cable, but a specific report for YOUR finished cable assembly -- in the bag with each cable we make.
